MZI Resources’ flagship Keysbrook Mineral Sands operation
Day two conference proceedings will begin out of the conference room, with a site visit to MZI Resources’ flagship Keysbrook Mineral Sands operation. The tour will give delegates a first-hand view of the simple mining operations, water-based mineral concentration process, and ongoing rehabilitation activities. A bus will depart from the conference venue to the site at 7am.
The operation 70km south of Perth, cost approximately $75 million to construct and commenced operations in October 2015. The Project is designed to produce approximately 100,000 tonnes of high value leucoxene products and zircon concentrate annually, with a current reserve life of 16 years and potential to extend that beyond 30 years.
Keysbrook is the world’s largest primary producer of leucoxene, a naturally occurring material rich in titanium dioxide, similar to rutile, which is used to manufacture pigment in paints, paper and plastics as well as a range of industrial applications including titanium metal. Zircon is also a high value industrial commodity used in a range of applications including ceramics, abrasives, refractories and 3D printing powders.
Keysbrook is a significant economic contributor to the local Peel region. Most of the circa-$40 million annual operating expenditure for wages, services and supplies is spent within WA, while almost 90% of the 60 operational employees residing within a 30 minute radius of the site. The project has a soft environmental footprint, utilising chemical-free processing involving simple gravity-based washing and screening of shallow naturally occurring sands. No waste is produced with over 97% of all mined material returned to the ground and rehabilitated for pastoral use within 2-3 growing seasons.
Note: All tour participants will be required to provide their own safety clothing. A full list will be provided prior to the site visit.
