TECHNICAL PERSPECTIVES

2:00 pm

With environmental management a key challenge for mining operators, our teams are focusing on delivering low impact solutions that utilise minimum resources (water, plant construction materials, etc) whilst maintaining high grade and recovery.

2:30 pm

Spirals have been the backbone of mineral sands plants since 1943. The Reflux Classifier invented by Kevin Galvin at the University of New South wales has the potential to offer greater efficiency and simpler flowsheets with lower capital costs. This would be a transformational technology change if it is taken up by the industry.

The Reflux Classifier incorporates a “laminar high shear rate” mechanism, which represents the latest in fine particle gravity based separation technology. The lamella section enhances the efficiency/capacity of the Reflux Classifier, producing a more compact, higher efficient separation unit when compared to competing fine coal and mineral processing equipment such as spirals, up-current classifiers and teeter bed separators. Recently FL Smidth has launched its modular Reflux Classifier plant, which is suitable for fines gravity separation applications.

Recent piloting and applications are cited and discussed in detail including operating history
