Minister for Education Christopher Pyne recently announced that an additional $22.2 million will be invested towards the Teach for Australia initiative – a program designed to take the nation’s brightest university graduates and place them in teaching positions.
Since being founded in late 2008, Teach for Australia has been consistently commended for its rigorous selection process and high levels of support, which ensure that the tertiary graduates chosen for this program achieve the best possible outcomes.
According to Mr Pyne, studies have shown that investing in a quality teaching workforce has a significant impact on improving the learning outcomes of students.
By providing alternative and attractive pathways into teaching, Mr Pyne and the Australian government hope that more of the country’s best students will choose to pursue this career path, helping to fill teaching shortages in the process.
“The government is committed to improving teacher quality. Teacher quality is one of the four pillars of our Students First approach. We see establishing more flexible pathways into teaching as central to achieving this,” said Mr Pyne.
Not only is this positive news for the nation as a whole, it could also trickle down into benefits for the higher education sector. With more students receiving a quality education during their formative years, it’s likely that more young people will pursue academia at the highest level in the future.
“In light of the continued proven success of the programme, the Australian government is proud to make this extra investment in Teach for Australia because we understand that excellence in the classroom directly translates into national prosperity and productivity,” said Mr Pyne.
