NSW Health Minister Jillian Skinner believes the upcoming Westmead Hospital redevelopment will be “the biggest hospital building project ever undertaken in Western Sydney”.
Speaking alongside Treasurer Andrew Constance outside the hospital on June 15, Ms Skinner noted that continued maintenance of the iconic Westmead hospital is essential to ensure the people of Western Sydney are able to access frontline health care far into the future.
Westmead Hospital is one of the largest and most renowned hospitals in Australia. Since opening in 1978, it has provided the Sydney metropolitan area with a range of essential healthcare services including a 24/7 emergency department.
The hospital also serves as one of the University of Sydney’s key educational hospitals for medical and dental students, a fact that highlights just how valuable this facility is to the people of New South Wales.
However, Ms Skinner says that the hospital is now in desperate need of repair. This is one of the main reasons why the redevelopment project has formed a major part of the state government healthcare policy for 2014/15.
“Westmead Hospital is iconic. Its name is synonymous with outstanding health care, thanks to the calibre of its staff, but its infrastructure is ageing and tired,” said Ms Skinner.
“This is the first stage of the major redevelopment of the Westmead campus which, when complete, will cost well over $1 billion and be the biggest hospital redevelopment in NSW.”
Although still in the planning stages, it is anticipated that this redevelopment project will cost the state more than $400 million during the initial stage alone.
The main priority of the redevelopment will focus on constructing a number of new buildings and care centres, as well as an Acute Services Building which will provide staff and patients with access to several high-tech operating theatres as well as additional parking and inpatient beds.
