Transport infrastructure was the centrepiece of the recent South Australia State Budget, with the Government promising to spend $10.3 billion on major projects over the next four years. The budget included new funding for the electrification of the rail network, a tramline extension to Port Adelaide, a new public transport ticketing system and the South Road underpass. The public transport infrastructure issues identified in the budget, such as the Bus Rapid Transport System, electrifying & standardising the rail lines and the tram development works are now being rolled out.
“In this budget alone, we are providing $648.4 million over the next four years for the first stage of the program to rebuild our rail and light rail infrastructure.”
Treasurer Kevin Foley, The Advertiser, June 2008
Why should you attend the SA Transport Infrastructure Summit this year?
Transport infrastructure is critical for the long-term development of South Australia’s economic growth. The Building Australia Fund is changing the face of South Australia’s transport networks. With the developments at Port Bonython, Olympic Dam and the Flinders Port’s inner and outer harbour, freight transport infrastructure is growing steadily to meet increasing demand.
The summit will feature senior government addresses, perspectives on the requirements of the freight network, and bring together experts on urban planning and transport to give their views. The focus of the event will be on:
- financing and managing current and future major transport infrastructure projects in South Australia
- providing an update on how transport infrastructure will grow to meet the needs of both freight and public transport customers.
