“If the plans…come to fruition, the [Japanese] government would assist companies in buying the rights to mine rare earth minerals wherever they are up for grabs. Tokyo is understood to have placed a high economic priority on securing global rare earth rights for Japanese companies because of the looming prospect of a resource war with China”
The Times, 10th December 2009

The demand for rare earths has grown enormously in recent times as they have become essential for many new technologies. Shortages of some of these rare earths is putting pressure on supply and future demand only looks set to increase and thus hike competition for these valuable deposits. China, the main producer of rare earths today, has recently announced plans to reduce its quota. The search is on to find alternative deposits and to re-open old sites to feed demand.

With increases in stock prices of 350% within just a few months, price and demand are leading to a push for development and re-opening closed mines. There is a growing concern about future supplies of these essential yet limited resources.
