The bulk of the disease burden in Australia is accounted by chronic conditions like cancer, diabetes and dementia. The costs associated with chronic diseases will continue to rise and dominate growth in national healthcare spending. What is the government’s strategy for an effective and integrated national healthcare system?
In its interim report released in February 2009, the National Health and Hospital Reform Commission (NHHRC) made recommendations to the commonwealth government to take complete responsibility for the primary healthcare system and establish GP super clinics, or comprehensive primary health care clinics. These clinics would provide multidisciplinary teams to better coordinate GP services, nursing, allied health and community health services.
With the NHHRC’s final report due to be released mid 2009, the time has never been more crucial to discuss the accessibility and affordability of primary healthcare within Australia. The report marks a pivotal movement in the government’s strategy to strengthen the national healthcare system but who will govern the GP super clinics and how will these clinics be funded?
The main emphasis is on redesigning the health care system by moving towards a model of preventative care and extending the roles for nursing and allied health professionals but does the GP Super Clinics model undermine existing general practices?
Will the clinics improve the provisions of services or fragment and destabilise existing health care services?
Informa’s Inaugural GP Super Clinics conference will explore answers to these questions as you spend a solid two days of learning and networking with industry experts.
Day one of the conference will assess the government’s primary health care strategy and the arguments for and against the GP super clinics model. Key topics include:
- Implementing the GP Super Clinic model
- Integrated care and multidisciplinary teams
- Financing the primary healthcare system
- Innovation in the primary health care facility
- Infrastructure and primary healthcare redesign
Day two of the conference will focus on clinical practice and governance of the GP super clinics, including issues surrounding the integration of health services available. Topics we are looking to cover include:
- Challenges facing the primary healthcare system
- Integrating hospital and primary healthcare
- Overcoming the separation of oral health from general health
- Health workforce and staff training
