Question time with Ian Ross; HSE Compliance Senior Advisor, Origin Energy

21 Oct 2014, by Informa Insights

Ian Ross
Ian Ross, Origin Energy

Ian Ross, Origin Energy has been involved in the transport and logistics industry for about 30 years. During this time he has worked across a number of sectors such as Mail, Building and Construction, Retail, Refrigerated, General and Resources. Since coming to Origin in 2011 he has been solely responsible for the development and implementation of the CSG Logistics Safety Code to ensure heavy vehicle safety and compliance is managed effectively and efficiently.

Ian says: “My appointment at Origin in the CSG industry has been challenging in so much as it is a mega project that has had to utilise all types of companies, contractors etc., both national and international”.

Ian will be speaking at the CoR & Heavy Vehicle Safety Conference, taking place on 3 & 4 December in Sydney.  He will be discussing how Heavy Vehicle National Law (HVNL), in particular, chain of responsibility (CoR) can be managed across multiple supply chains. In advance of the conference, we asked Ian a few questions:

Please tell us a little about yourself/your role:
I have been involved in the transport and logistics industry for about 30 years. During this time I have worked across a number of sectors such as:

  • Mail
  • Building and Construction
  • Retail
  • Refrigerated
  • General
  • Resources

Since coming to origin in 2011 I have been solely responsible for the development and implementation of the CSG Logistics Safety Code to ensure heavy vehicle safety and compliance is managed effectively and efficiently.

How has the roll out of the new laws affected your business?
Given that Origin has primarily been a contracting construction company in the project stage where it has engaged all types of contractor from local to international and everything in between there has been a varying degree of understanding across the board in relation to heavy vehicle law and chain of responsibility. The adoption of the CSG logistics Safety Code by the 4 major CSG Companies has ensure that there is consistence across the industry in education, understanding and assurance programs assisting all parties to be able to better demonstrate compliance and reasonable steps

What do you think will be the key challenge for the industry going into next year?
In 2015 Origin will move from project construction to gas delivery and the sustain phase.

This will see a big change in the way Origin will operate.

What is the main issue facing heavy vehicle safety?
I think that the main issue still facing the transport and logistics industry is everyone’s acceptance that they “Are” in the chain of responsibility and they do have a role to play in the safety of our industry.

What will you be discussing at the conference and why is this important?
I will explain how Heavy Vehicle National Law (HVNL) in particular chain of responsibility (CoR) can be managed across multiple supply chains end to end that not only has the flexibility to work in the Coal Seam Gas (CSG) industry but also be applicable and recognised in other industries such as Retail, Steel and Electrical cable wholesalers etc.

What other presentation are you looking forward to at this year’s conference?
I am looking forward to hearing from the NHVR and their views on becoming CoR compliant but I am sure that there will be value takeout from other sessions as well.

Don’t miss the CoR & Heavy Vehicle Safety Conference in Sydney, 3-4 December. Book now to hear from an outstanding line-up of speakers.
