We had the opportunity to interview Captain Allan Gray, Federal Master of the Company of Master Mariners of Australia who will be speaking at the inaugural Master Mariners of Australia Congress on the 7th and 8th April 2011 in Fremantle, WA, Australia.

1. The Company of Master Mariners is hosting its inaugural Master Mariners of Australia Congress in Fremantle this April. The role of Master Mariners has evolved throughout the decades and from your experience, what have been the greatest challenges to this role?
2. How has the issue of the criminalization of Masters and their officers impacted daily operations?
3. Given the advances in technology, is it safer now to be at sea?
4. From a mariner’s perspective, how do you feel about the working situation of onboard paperwork and managing the number of inspections needed once berthed?
5. The have been passionate calls to rebuild Australian flagged shipping. What impact would a revitalized shipping policy?
6. The two day Congress program features an impressive list of local and international speakers that includes Master Marines, government and shipping representatives, academics and port authorities. What do you hope to achieve from hosting this inaugural event?
