The City of Greater Bendigo (CoGB) is fortunate to have a mayor who knows how to take care of council issues, while also running a family business and raising funds for local hospitals. We’ve taken a closer look at the life of Cr Lisa Ruffell to see what it’s like to be mayor of the CoGB.CoGB isn’t just a centre for diverse culture and national heritage; it has one of the most dedicated mayors serving the local community. Cr Ruffell began her term as mayor in 2012 and has worked tirelessly to develop the quality of life for local residents and businesses.
Elected to the council in 2008, Cr Ruffell has a demonstrated history of listening to and working with the community, with special emphasis on transport and local infrastructure. Upon being elected to office, she has implemented an open door policy giving local residents the opportunity to discuss important issues directly with the mayor.
One of her greatest career highlights was being awarded the 2000 Australian Federation of Business and Professional Woman Incorporated (BPW) Bendigo Business Woman of the Year. She was also a finalist in the 2000 BPW Victorian Business Woman of the Year Awards.
She was a member of the Victoria Police Blue Ribbon Committee, forging closer links between Victoria Police and the City of Greater Bendigo community and raising much needed funds for the Bendigo and Heathcote hospitals.
Cr Ruffell has made news lately with plans to upgrade the Bendigo Botanic Gardens, and her recent visit with Federal Minister Anthony Albanese concerning the roll-out of the NBN.
CoGB can easily be described as an urbanised regional centre; located 90 minutes from Melbourne and a population over 100, 000, the city values its cultural heritage and encourages the celebration of the local spirit.
