Dr Victor Hugo, General Manager – Exploration and Geology at Iluka Resources, will be speaking at the 15th Anniversary Mineral Sands Conference held next week on the 24-25 March in Melbourne.
Dr Hugo joined Iluka 17 years ago within the Business Development Team, before taking on the role of Technical Marketing Manager the following year in 1999. After leaving Iluka in 2001 and working with the minerals sands industry research and consulting company TZMI as a Director, he rejoined Iluka in 2003 as General Manager, Sales and Marketing. Dr Hugo was then appointed the title of General Manager Product and Technical Development in 2009 and subsequently the General Manager Exploration and Geology in 2013, a title he still holds today.
Iluka Resources recently announced the restart of its synthetic rutile plant at Capel, bucking some of the recent trends for the mining industry. According to a statement from the company, this will lead to the recruitment of approximately 80 employees and 70 contractors to support the restart of Tutunup South mine and the SR 2 kiln reactivation. Iluka’s growing confidence in the outlook for its mineral sands products could see further reactivation of synthetic rutile capacity when “market demand and commercial conditions are appropriate”, Managing Director David Robb commented.
With this in mind, Dr Hugo will be speaking about Iluka’s perspective on the challenges facing the Mineral Sands industry, which encompasses an overview of the key dynamics of the mineral sands industry; exploration, resource and technical consideration to meet long-term demand; and Iluka’s key areas of focus going forward at the conference.
