Anthony Kirke is the General Manager of Fortescue Metals Group’s Solomon Mine. Anthony will be speaking to attendees at AJM’s Automated and Remotely Operated Mining Summit about mine site automation at the Solomon operation. His talk will cover an overview of the operation and projects already implemented as well as give a future outlook and opportunities this will offer the business
Anthony graduated from the University of Western Australia as a Mechanical Engineer. He commenced his career in the mining industry with Mt Newman Mining at Port Hedland in. In his first ten years with Mt Newman Mining/BHP Anthony worked across both mine and port in maintenance and operations roles covering both fixed and mobile plant. During this period he worked his way up from an Engineer to Manager Ore Processing at BHP’s Newman Operation.
This was followed by a five-year period in Chile at the Escondida Copper Operation, initially in a Corporate Role as Manager HSE and then as Manager Mobile Maintenance at the Escondida Minesite.
His experience in Chile combined with exposure to mines in North America had a profound impact on Anthony’s view of the Australian Mining industry, in particular the significant opportunity that exists in the Pilbara to increase efficiency through more rigorous mine planning and increased operational productivity.
Returning to the Pilbara in 2001 Anthony was appointed Vice President of the HBI Plant in Port Hedland where he spent over four years before moving to Rio Tinto Iron Ore Corporate in an asset management role. He joined FMG in a similar role in 2010 before being appointed to his current role of GM Solomon responsible for the operational startup of this new 60 Mtpa Project for Fortescue.
