Mining engineering growth and jobs are at the centre of a new 30-year plan for Queensland’s resources sector.
The Newman government said its ResourcesQ framework, which was announced at the Queensland Resources Council State of the Sector forum in Brisbane on Tuesday (November 19), will give clear direction for the future.
Minister for natural resources and mines Andrew Cripps stated that the scheme will be beneficial both to mining companies and firms in supplementary sectors.
“The mining industry provides direct and indirect employment for more than 300,000 Queenslanders and delivers significant economic benefit across the state’s economy,” he remarked.
“We will work with all those involved in Queensland’s resources sector – from the pit to the port, from the drill hole to the transmission line, from the permit application to the smelter, and from the environmental assessment to the building of a rail network.”
Queensland Resources Council chief executive Michael Roche lauded the ResourcesQ initiative, claiming it is an excellent opportunity to boost the state’s international reputation as a top supplier of mineral and energy sources.
He also highlighted the importance of government and industry working together to achieve mutually beneficial aims.
“Queensland’s ability to capitalise on the opportunities arising from the Asian century demands the type of productive working relationships foreshadowed in the Newman government’s ResourcesQ plan,” he added.
Premier Campbell Newman said the government will communicate with resources businesses to ensure a strategic vision for the state’s mining future can be effectively implemented.
“The aim will be to ensure Queensland remains a global resource destination and continues to build on its competitive strength,” he told delegates in Brisbane.
His comments came as the Newman government prepared to release spatial data and information about the state’s mining industry through the launch of a Google Earth-based app titled Mine Globe.
