Key Learning Objectives
- Interpret the differences between a SmartGrid and a traditional grid
- Review the difference between total system design and silo based design for different technical architectures across transmission, distribution and end-user networks
- Investigate the myth of ‘just adding ICT’ to a power network to get a SmartGrid
- Consider the implications of public acceptance, regulatory challenges, and technology acceleration for the deployment of a SmartGrid
- Analyse the supply chain challenges for a free market SmartGrid implementation and propose solutions
- Identify key skills requirements for SmartGrid deployment
- Understand the enabling force of a SmartGrid for flexibility, capacity and resilience
- Learn to make a business case for a SmartGrid and develop ideas to implementation
About the Course
This course is designed to inform, explore and challenge views on how the traditional grid infrastructure can be transformed, rather than evolve, into a new flexible, user friendly service providing economic, environmentally sustainable and culturally acceptable electricity infrastructure for future generations.
The course will consider not only the technical challenges but those that stop technology from delivering its full potential; economics (including regulatory), environmental and cultural barriers. System design will include the challenges of free market delivery and the fragmented supply chains that either prevent or enable delivery of flexible solutions.
Planning and deployment will be touched on to understand the linkages between good technical solutions and viably acceptable solutions for the general public.
The SmartGrid of the future will require new skill sets and competences the course will investigate where these can be harvested in time to make a difference.
We will also explore the challenge of how each part of the supply chain can play its part in delivering the vision while demonstrating a business case for maintaining the next quarter results.
