Australia’s shift to rights-based aged care has highlighted critical challenges around restrictive practices, particularly chemical restraint, where medication intent- not type- determines if it constitutes restrictive practice. Recent research reveals frequent disconnects between General Practitioners and aged care providers, creating compliance risks and potential resident harm. While providers hold legal responsibility, GPs remain professionally accountable for prescribing decisions under their codes of conduct. This session will explore innovative collaboration models, including Jewish Care Victoria’s approach, to demonstrate how bridging this professional gap can significantly reduce reliance on restraint. Simon will explore practical partnership strategies that move beyond compliance to deliver genuinely safe, person-centred care.
