The 4th Annual National Health Workforce Summit will address how we tackle Australia’s current healthcare workforce challenges, particularly around the changes needed to create a sustainable workforce for the future. The summit will bring together high-level executives from across the healthcare landscape, HR professionals, C-Suite executives, policymakers, educators, and other key stakeholders.

The summit aims to explore innovative solutions and strategies to enhance the quality, accessibility, and sustainability of the healthcare workforce and ensure that it meets the evolving needs of the workforce. It will provide a platform for attendees to engage in thought-provoking discussions, exchange ideas, and establish collaborative networks.

The Australian Society of Anaesthetists will launch its Anaesthetist Workforce Modelling Final Report (2024) at Australian Parliament House in August 2024. This new report examines the current composition of, and trends in, the Australian anaesthetic workforce and anticipates likely changes in the supply of anaesthetists needed over the next 10 years to meet future service demands.

  • The Australian Health Workforce is under pressure and is changing in its participation rates.
  • There is a current shortage of Anaesthetists and there are predicted further shortfalls in the supply of anaesthetists relative to future demand.
  • The ASA commissioned this study to ascertain the extent of the issue aiming to be solved as governments have various levers at their disposal to appropriately solve supply and demand without compromising safety and quality.

  • Background and Importance of Workforce Planning: What is the GP Workforce Planning and Prioritisation program? Program structure, involved parties and key questions.
  • Methodology for Modelling GP Access Relative to Need: Community need was primarily assessed using socio-economic and demographic indicators, and the results for GP access and community need were integrated and visualized through a tiered workforce need grouping.
  • Sample Workforce Need Modelling Results and Next steps: A sample of results for GP access and community need was combined and visualized using a tiered workforce need grouping and availability of registrar training capacity at general practices. What is next for the program?

  • Healthy North Coast developed a clinical society model in response to the particular needs of the primary health network area in 2021.
  • Since this time, the clinical society model has grown from strength to strength and has over 2500 members.
  • The success of this program will be discussed, together with evaluation and impact and next steps.
