Mining in the ‘Top End’ – a look into the factors impacting the industry

19 Aug 2015, by Informa Insights

In the lead up to 9th Annual Mining the Territory Conference, 3 key speakers spared some time to answer a couple of questions about the factors impacting the Australia’s mining industry going into the next few years. Here is what they had to say.

What factors do you think will impact Australia’s mining industry heading into 2016/17?

Main factors will be commodity price versus AUD$, and from the exploration perspective, attracting funding. The global volatility is likely to continue so I think gold focussed companies will be well positioned.

While it is good news that advanced economies are expected to show higher growth, the ability of junior explorers to raise funds will continue to be affected by volatility on global sharemarkets.

Negative – Challenging access to capital for junior explorers/developers.
Positive – Hopefully see a reduction in volatility of the commodity markets and the impact of lower AUD$ will be positive for sourcing investments from overseas and for producers here in Australia.

What are the discussions that you are looking forward to having with your industry peers at Mining the Territory 2015?

Rob: Some of the keys to sustaining a viable junior mining sector in the NT continue to be attracting “risk capital” to the junior sector , reducing red/green tape, and facilitating ground access – i.e. a risk based approach to compliance issues. Emmerson Resources have attracted co-funding from the NT, under their CORE initiative and this has been instrumental for our deep drilling program and the application of new technologies such as the regional Seismic Reflection traverse – thus I will be interested in discussions around such initiatives which promote bold exploration in new frontiers and opening up new areas that are currently locked up.

Fiona: I’m looking forward to discussing what the Commonwealth Government’s White Paper on Developing Northern Australia means for helping to unlock the Northern Territory’s minerals and onshore oil and gas potential.

Andy: Updates on other projects in the Territory, and continue discussions to review ways for companies to work together to develop opportunities. Looking forward to meeting with key stakeholders in the NT including local government & small businesses.
