Ballarat rail station master plan moves forward

25 Sep 2013, by Informa Insights

Rail Industry FundamentalsPlans to revitalise Ballarat Station and the surrounding precinct are moving ahead, according to the Victorian government.

The community is being encouraged to get involved with the railway engineering and regional development plan, which aims to open the area up as a place of activity, while reinforcing the station’s role as a major transport hub.

Deputy premier Peter Ryan and minister for public transport Terry Mulder welcomed the ideas of citizens, claiming there have been some terrific contributions already.

“It’s great to see the community being involved in planning for this iconic precinct that has the potential to serve as a gateway not only to the city of Ballarat, but the dynamic region of western Victoria,” said Mr Ryan.

Mr Mulder agreed, saying that the development of the Ballarat Station master plan is gaining momentum.

“The vault of local knowledge and creative opinions shared by the community has contributed to a range of options that aim to rejuvenate the site and make it a safe and lively place,” he explained.

The City of Ballarat is teaming up with the Victorian coalition government to deliver the rejuvenation initiative, with the idea of unlocking the station’s transport capabilities and utilising underused land and structures.

“I encourage the Ballarat community to come and view the design options next month, either at the open house or online, and provide their input,” Mr Mulder said.

The project is being jointly managed by the Department of Transport, Planning and Local Infrastructure; VicTrack; Regional Development Victoria; and the City of Ballarat.

A number of issues were raised by the community regarding the Ballarat Station precinct revival, including congestion, poor presentation of heritage buildings and a lack of integration with the city centre.

The project is due for completion in the early months of 2014.
