Cyber-Attacks – A threat to critical aviation infrastructure?

30 Jan 2013, by Informa Insights

Last week Prime Minister Julia Gillard announced a new national cyber security centre that will be established towards the end of the year. The facility will bring together the expertise of Defence, ASIO, the Attorney-General’s Department, Australian Federal Police and the Australian Crime Commission in a single location.

In the past, critical infrastructure has already been the target of cyber-attacks and online threats establish an area of growing concern for the aviation industry. Pure Hacking chief technology officer Ty Miller presented in 2011 about the possibility of cyber-attacks against aviation critical infrastructure. Miller identified cyber-attacks as the second biggest threat to airlines after natural disasters.

The recent move by federal government underpins the central role that cybercrime and cyber terrorism are expected to play in matters of national security. At the Asia Pacific AVSEC conference 2012, Dr Christopher Beggs, director at ICS Security Risk Specialist gave an overview of cyber-attacks that targeted the aviation industry. The presentation can now be downloaded here.

Cyber security for the aviation industry will again be a central subject at Asia Pacific AVSEC 2013. The conference will be held on the 18th and 19th March in Canberra and will feature a number of technology focussed presentations. Debra Blaskett, manager security and emergency services at Perth Airport will deliver a case study presentation developing a robust Security Management System (SeMS) for airport operators. Klaus Felsche, director of intent management & analytics at the Department of Immigration & Citizenship will talk about the use of data-informed technology to improve the screening process in the arrival hall.
