• Understand what different types of trailers there are
• Understand what different types of cranes there are
• Understand what different types of barges there are
• Know when and where this equipment is used

• Introduction to the heavy lift & transport industry
• Introduction to the course director
• What do we know
• Brief overview of trailers, transporter, cranes, barges
• Which equipment is used and when

Module 2
Dimensions, weights and force

Learning Outcomes:

• Understand the impact of dimensions, gravity and weight
• Appreciate basic mathematics
• Know how to do simple calculation

Module Content:

• Why are dimensions & weight important?
• What is gravity and where does it come from?
• Scientists whose discoveries we use daily
• A bit of trigonometry (unfortunately)
• A sample calculation

Module 3
Heavy transport

Learning Outcomes:

• Understand suspension and its role in heavy lift
• Understand stability and its role in transport
• Know about lashing and securing

Module Content:

• What are transporters and how do they work?
• Various suspension possibilities
• Pull type vs. self-propelled transport
• Stability, what is possible and what is not
• Lashing & securing

Module 4
Heavy lifting

Learning Outcomes:

• Understand load charts and how they are used
• Appreciate the different lifting scenarios
• Know the difference between spreader bars and lifting beams

• Rigging forces

Module 5
Load outs (Roll on/off)

Learning Outcomes:

• Understand the maritime regulations involved in RoRo
• Know how tides affect operations
• Appreciate the various load-out types

Module 6
Jacking and skidding

Learning Outcomes:

• Understand the different jacking methods used
• Understand how skidding works
• Learn about gantries and other techniques

Module 7
Accidents and how to avoid them

• Understand the various accident types
• Learn how to communicate better
• Learn how to avoid accidents in heavy lift scenarios

Maintenance and inspection
