Australia’s regional ports have witnessed extraordinary growth in the last decade. Across the country, new legislation and financing models are being introduced to maximise the competitiveness of our regional ports, streamline operations and strengthen the economic role of regional ports to meet Australia’s current and potential competitiveness..
The 10th annual Regional Ports Summit will be hosted by NSW Ports in Wollongong and showcase the latest port developments and assess the policy, planning and operating strategies designed to improve the efficiencies of Australia’s regional ports: gateways for facilitating trade, engagement and regional growth.
Featuring local and national case studies, the two-day event will include a site tour of Port Kembla, which continues to grow to accommodate both the expansion of traditional industries along with the development of new ones. The diverse commodity base of the port today reflects the growth of the region and its capability to service the growing South West Sydney market.
WELCOME MESSAGE FOR 10TH REGIONAL PORTS CONFERENCE
Welcome to Wollongong! It is great to host the 10th Regional Ports Conference.
Wollongong is home to the Port of Port Kembla – a fantastic regional asset.
The future of the Port of Kembla is bright and full of tremendous opportunity for new business and job opportunities for the Illawarra region.
Already, it is New South Wales’ largest motor vehicle import hub and grain export port. It also caters for a growing range of dry bulk, bulk liquid and general cargo.
The Port of Port Kembla will also become home, as a second container port.
With this bright future ahead and further expansion plans for the Port of Port Kembla under consideration as part of NSW Ports’ 30 Year Master Plan, there remain a number of key challenges, which need to be addressed.
The most pressing involve land transport connections to and from the Port, and the preservation of existing buffer zones so residential areas can continue to co-exist with all activities in and around the Port of Port Kembla.
NSW Labor strongly supports the continued expansion of the Port of Port Kembla. On behalf of NSW Labor, I have made infrastructure investment pledges, in particular, to help complete the Maldon-Dombarton rail link.
My ultimate objective, as the Member for Wollongong, and representing the Port of Port Kembla, is to connect it directly with the third largest economy in Australia – south-west Sydney.
The Port of Port Kembla can become Western Sydney’s port of choice.
I look forward to addressing the Conference and wish participants successful deliberations.
