overview

According to Homelessness Australia, on any given night in Australia, 1 in 200 people are homeless. However, shocking this statistic, many believe that this rate is an underestimate given the changes in social support and health services, housing affordability, youth unemployment and family violence.

A new national study released in April 2016 by Swinburne University, Charles Stuart University and the University of Western Australia found that youth homelessness, alone, is costing the health and justice systems more than $600 million a year. More importantly, the study also found that the cost to the community outweighed what was spent each year on support services.

The biennial Homelessness Summit, through a series of policy updates, case studies, and examples of innovative projects from across Australia and internationally, will seek to bring together leaders in government, health, social enterprise, housing, community and welfare to discuss a collective approach to service delivery and reducing homelessness.

The Conference will be a great opportunity to interact with like-minded people.

Topics to be examined include:

  • Early intervention programs and breaking the cycle
  • The challenges of making short term projects into long term programs
  • Generational homelessness – insights, recommendations, prevention
  • The role and importance of employment services
  • Affordable housing and its importance in alleviating homelessness
  • Engaging with the private rental market
  • The relationship between domestic violence and homelessness
  • Youth homelessness and early intervention strategies
  • Older people at risk of homelessness
  • Integration of housing with aged care services for the elderly homeless
  • Integration of homeless and health services to provide a better flow
  • Homelessness in regional, rural and remote Australia

  • Making the most of media and the use of social media to build community and raise awareness, profile and funding
