Continuous conveyors have the capacity to decrease downtime and reduce the construction schedule. In a new design for California, USA’s Los Angeles Purple Line Extension Section 1, continuous conveyors have gained another ability: they can change direction. The unique system was designed to accommodate two EPB TBMs boring parallel tunnels eastward before being re-launched westward.

To accomplish this feat, the belt storage units were located off tunnel axis, requiring the tunnel belts to twist and turn through the station once the muck was discharged into the vertical storage unit. Modular components were designed for limited space due to the narrow launch shaft.

Other conveyor designs are stretching the limits of muck removal, including those designed for extremely deep shafts and long project durations. This presentation will showcase the latest conveyor technology and discuss future directions for continuous conveyor design.

3:30 pm

The WestConnex M5 design and construct consortium opted for a non-traditional approach to the permanent tunnel electrical infrastructure. The Electrical Equipment Rooms were manufactured to the point of electrical and mechanical completion offsite to minimise underground installation time. The presentation will discuss the benefits and pitfalls of rapidly deployable power solutions and how to ensure positive outcomes for your project are actually achieved.

The presentation will give an insight into the design and construction aspects of several challenging major underground infrastructure projects that have been completed and are still on-going in Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand and Indonesia. With vast infrastructure development in the South East Asia Region, future planning and design will require innovative solutions and technologies to overcome the challenges of sustainability and productivity.

Lessons learnt from tunnelling projects employing technical innovations will be shared and further application of these technics to the upcoming South East Asia Tunnel Projects will be discussed.
