Road safety is more than just a transport issue. Safe roads save lives and money and encourage better use of transport infrastructure for both passengers and goods. This is especially the case as Australians drive long distances. Australian’s road network is the 7th longest in the world with over 900,000 kilometres of road stretching across an extreme landscape from congested to remote freight corridors that connect urban and rural communities to their goods, essential services and social networks.
“The annual economic cost of road accidents in Australia has been conservatively estimated to be at least $18 billion a year”
(ANZ Journal of Surgery. 78 (9):780-783, September 2008)
The Bureau of Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Economics (BITRE) recently reported that the domestic freight task has doubled in size over the past two decades and is forecast to continue growing to meet the demand for goods and commodity exports. With thirty-five percent of Australia's domestic freight task shifted by road in 2007 ongoing investment is needed to improve transit times, reduce road freight operating costs and ensure drivers and their goods, vehicles included, arrive safely and on time.
Road Safety 2009 will bring together transport operators and associations, academics and risk and safety professionals to exchange open and practical discussions on current projects and future planning priorities. The forum will showcase the latest industry developments in road safety in order to share best practice and move towards creating a safer and more secure road network.
