Congestion on Australian roads is reaching crisis point. Bottlenecks are not only a point of frustration for motorists but have proven detrimental to Australia’s business productivity and economic growth, the environment and social wellbeing.

The recent release of the Ken Henry Tax Review, strongly recommending major reforms to Australia’s road taxes to reflect the true cost of road use, has now thrust the road pricing debate into the public domain and put further pressure on governments to take action.

The transport industry acknowledges that road pricing reform is needed to manage growing congestion across its critical infrastructure, and prevent significant harm to the future economy. Road Pricing 2010 will provide a timely opportunity to collaborate, prepare and enhance the industry’s understanding of the following key issues:

  • What are the Government’s plans to take road pricing forward?
  • Aligning the Henry Review recommendations with existing plans for heavy vehicle pricing reforms
  • Understanding the long term cost implications of not introducing road pricing reforms
  • Examining potential pricing models and how they can be successful in Australia
  • What can Australia learn from the experience of international road pricing initiatives?
  • The impact of road pricing on the Australia’s freight industry and freight task
  • Understanding the factors that need to be taken into consideration when Calculating road pricing
  • Financing road pricing technologies – what are the right technologies?
  • Revenue collection and distribution models – using revenue to improve existing infrastructure
  • Gaining public and industry acceptance for new road and congestion taxes
  • Delivering sustainable economic and social outcomes whilst fostering growth

Road Pricing 2010 is designed to provide crucial insights into the Australian transport sector’s vision for road pricing, the policies and frameworks which should support it, and the expected challenges of its introduction.

You will meet with a range of expert speakers including:

  • Neil Aplin, Project Director, COAG Road Reform Plan
  • Meena Naidu, Chief Policy Officer, National Transport Commission
  • David Simon, Chairman, Australian Trucking Association
  • Max Lay, Director, ConnectEast and Advisor Road Australia
  • Professor David Hensher, Director, Institute of Transport and Logistics Studies
  • Geoff Goeldner, Project Manager, Smart Transport and Roads Project, National ICT Australia
  • Bryan Nye, CEO, Australasian Railway Association
  • Dr Anthony Ockwell, Director, Saha International
