Why attend the Rail Interoperability Workshop
Delegates will have the opportunity to hear expert domestic and international insights into interoperability drivers and policy, and assessments of its effectiveness (including rail in Europe and Asia, the Australian rail perspective from QR and ARTC and a range of cross-industry case studies).

Interoperability will play a leading role in the future of the rail industry and no single organisation can do it alone. Collaboration is a key tool and the Rail Interoperability Workshop 2010 will provide a forum to discuss the way forward.

Why is interoperability important to the Rail Industry ?
Interoperability is the ability of different organisations to communicate and exchange data across systems and devices. Interoperability covers all aspects of work in the rail industry, from HR to technology and finance. It involves the creation of common or compatible operating procedures, communications links, standards and equipment.

There is a consensus among Australian rail industry bodies that interoperability is the most efficient way forward. But the looming problem is that to achieve a seamless system the varying operators need to purchase compatible equipment, which isn’t happening at the moment.

The aim of the agenda is to alert delegates to the potential issues non-interoperability will cause and make sure they buy into the solutions.

KEY CONFERENCE TOPICS

The Rail Interoperability Workshop is hinged on the following three topics:

  • Policy environment/policy drivers for interoperability
  • Implementation of interoperability
  • Lessons learnt

An international perspective:

  • A European view of rail interoperability
  • Achieving interoperability in the Asian rail landscape

Cross- industry perspectives:

  • What are the forces shaping interoperability within the Australian Defence Force?
  • Government communications during a crisis/natural disaster
  • Identifying the drivers for interoperability in aviation
  • Telecommunications - Interoperability as a business imperative

The Australasian rail perspective:

  • ARTC - Setting the framework for interoperable systems

AFTERNOON DAY TWO: WORKSHOPS

The afternoon will comprise of interoperability workshops which will give delegates the opportunity to contribute to the development of an interoperability strategy and/or standard for the Australian rail industry. The sessions will focus on three particular areas: rolling stock, train control systems and infrastructure and aims to draw out thinking on:
