Victoria is experiencing a population spike of unprecedented proportions. In the year to June 2010, Melbourne grew by 79,000 people, the majority now living more than 20 kilometres from the city. This boom has placed enormous pressure on near-capacity transport networks, resulting in overcrowding on public transport and heavily congested roads.
The delivery of transport projects is therefore a major, and very current, issue for the state. The Ballieu-led Coalition took government in November on the back of a campaign to improve transport efficiency through the following key commitments:
- Establishing an independent Victorian Public Transport Development Authority
- $900 million funding for rail infrastructure
- $6.5 million (in first term) to begin development of a rail link to Melbourne Airport
- $50 million for design and planning, land acquisition, and preliminary construction works of a rail line to link Avalon Airport to Melbourne and Geelong
- $379 million to remove or start planning for removing eight metropolitan level crossings
- 40 new trains for the Melbourne suburban network.
Solving the state’s complex transport challenges is no easy feat but the 9th annual Victorian Transport Infrastructure Summit will closely examine the plans in the pipelines to achieve a world-class transport network for the efficient movement of people and freight and the subsequent opportunities for the transport sector.
Join government officials, transport planners and operators to discuss vital transport planning issues including:
- Improving the daily commute for Victorians – Examining government plans to ease overcrowding and delays on public transport
- Understanding the role of the Public Transport Development Authority towards achieving the government’s public transport objectives
- Securing federal funding for Victoria’s transport projects
- Transport’s place in Victoria’s infrastructure plan - Proposals for short, medium and long-term major projects
- Achieving the vision of a fully-integrated, inclusive and sustainable transport system for Victoria
- Accommodating Victoria’s population boom
- Regional Rail Link Project Update
- Cutting congestion – Strategies to relieve the bottlenecks of Melbourne’s freeways network
- Maintaining the viability of the ports industry – The government’s vision for Victorian ports over the next decade and beyond
- Analysing the role of diffusing freight activities away from a single central metropolitan core as a solution to Melbourne’s current capacity constraints
- Ensuring rail’s competitiveness within an integrated freight network
- Understanding and responding to challenges facing Local Government in providing and maintaining its transport infrastructure
- Skilling the sector – Is Victoria at risk of losing skilled workers to other states?
