Why be involved in the Victorian Transport infrastructure summit 2009?

  • Investing in infrastructure = economic stimulus = recovery-ready, world-class transport
Since our 2008 Summit, State and Federal Governments have fast-tracked major infrastructure spending as part of a stimulus strategy for getting through the Global Financial Crisis. Headlining the Victorian Government's $11.5 billion spend on infrastructure projects is more than $3 billion to begin the first stage of the government's Transport Plan.
  • Have your say in the transport debate: The $38 billion Victorian Transport Plan is now underway and will deliver short, medium and long term projects for Victoria's cities, regional centres, country towns and rural areas with projects including the $6 billion North East Link, a $2.8 billion tunnel alternative to the West Gate Bridge, the $750 million Peninsula Link and the $380 million Truck Action Plan. How will the Plan impact on the State’s prosperity and liveability and as importantly, the productivity of your business?
  • It’s been a record year: Following this record State budget spend on transport infrastructure, the Commonwealth signalled its biggest investment in urban rail and Victoria's biggest rail project in 80 years, with the Federal Government’s 'Building Australia Fund' committing $3.2 billion to Melbourne’s $4.3 billion Regional Rail Link project. What will be impacts of this investment be for job creation and project delivery?
  • How important is transport to Victoria? The freight transport, distribution and logistics industry is Victoria's third largest economic generator, with the State being home to 25 percent of Australians, contributing 25 percent of the nation’s fuel excise and the origin of 25 percent of the nation’s freight task (Premier Brumby, 6 March 2009). Sustainable transport, from public transport to export infrastructure, is a vital part of the State’s future growth and by extension, a key stimulant of the national economy.
  • Now is the time to act and discuss what matters with industry stakeholders: There has never been a better time to assess the planning, funding and strategy necessary to ensure Victoria's sustainable transport future. Now in its 7th year, the Summit has developed into a pivotal forum for industry, transport users and government representatives to exchange open and practical discussions on current projects and future planning developments.
