Coal markets have been hit by falling demand and coal prices are expected to slide even further.
However despite economic uncertainty, there are still significant mining activities in the NSW coalfields:
- Coalworks is at a vital stage in the development of its Oaklands coal mine in the South West of New South Wales
- Felix Resources’ Moolarben open cut mine in the Hunter Valley is expected to start up in September
- Shenhua Energy is looking at starting the drilling program at the Watermark project in the Gunnedah basin.
- Plus, the untapped potential of coal seam gas in the State is driving sustained activities in exploring and developing the NSW coalfields.
It is in this context that the Australian Journal of Mining will be holding the NSW Coal & Energy conference in Sydney on 28 and 29 September 2009.
