Australia is moving forward. Economic growth, underwritten by the mining boom is framed by a burgeoning population with demand for infrastructure at historic intensity. For the past decade, Informa has been monitoring domestic PPP projects across the nation, bringing together consortium partners and policy makers together for an honest appraisal for the strategies and initiatives that seem to be working, and inevitably, those that are not.
With a new government in Victoria, minority government in Canberra and a clearer picture of the post GFC playing field in the private sector, this year’s event is set to deviate somewhat from tradition, with presentations exploring alternative models of PPP procurement such as government bonds in NSW and Western Australia.
Re-elected Vic Labor to build 20 schools
Labor's $1.7 billion commitment to build 20 new schools in Victoria's booming suburbs could involve controversial public private partnerships.
Premier John Brumby travelled to the Labor electorate of Bentleigh, in Melbourne's southeast, on Thursday to make the government's last major education announcement before next weekend's state election. AAP November 18, 2010 read full story here.
Brumby Government Promises $4.5 Billion A Year To Build New Infrastructure
The Premier, John Brumby, today invited young Victorian apprentices to join Labor in building the State’s next era of prosperity, pledging that 2000 Victorian apprentices would be employed every year for the next four years on the Government’s multi-billion-dollar building program.
Visiting apprentices at NMIT in Heidelberg with Education and Skills Minister Bronwyn Pike and Eltham Labor MP Steve Herbert, Mr Brumby said a future Labor Government would invest more than $4.5 billion a year in building new infrastructure (rail, roads, schools, hospitals) and in keeping the jobs coming to Victoria.
“I want the next generation of young Victorians to join me in building the next era of prosperity for our great State,” Mr Brumby said. Source:Government of Victoria, 22nd November 2010 read full story here.
Hospital to lift jobs says director
NEW Bendigo Hospital project executive director David Walker has denied that a public-private partnership model for some departments will cost jobs.
Mr Walker said the winning consortium would have a 25-year contract to operate the new hospital, then would hand it back to the government in as-new condition. Bendigo Health would operate the hospital but the buildings would be handled by the consortium.
"Some might be part of the PPP and some retained by Bendigo Health. We understand there are sensitivities about people’s jobs." Bendigo Advertiser 10 Nov, 2010 read full story here
The forthcoming PPP program will be focusing on the policy and regulatory frameworks, at both the federal and state level, and how current legislation is having a direct impact on contractual terms and project consortiums down the pipe.
PPP projects have a bright future in Australia but, as every industry stakeholder knows, the rules are changing, fast. Be part of the annual delegation to this crucial industry event and stay abreast of the current and future PPP models.
