PREVENTION OR EARLY INTERVENTION

Australia is now considered to be one of the fattest nations in the world! With a ‘big’ statement like this, it is no surprise that the Australian government is now beginning to realise its impact on the Australian healthcare system and its overall economy. The two most vulnerable groups, children and the aged population are fighting the battle of the obesity tsunami. In the past, more emphasis was placed in the treatment of obesity rather than the prevention and early intervention aspects. The Australian government has only recently started to invest in implementing fitness, health and wellbeing programs. However, this alone is not enough.

Last year the Australian government had released a report called ‘Weighing it up: Obesity in Australia’, which received much reviews. In 2010 the government released ‘The Preventative Approach’, the government’s response to the report of the National Preventative Health Taskforce. Since there have been many talks on this matter and less action where needed, the fundamental question to date is: Will this work? Additionally, the Greens proposed the concept of a junk food tax to subsidise for healthy food, but this is yet to be implemented. Should junk food advertising be banned? Who should be held accountable? Is it unhealthy food manufacturers, for the rise in obesity or is it parents and educators, who are responsible for the welfare of their children? And we, as a nation, getting too comfortable and too sluggish?

The 2nd Annual Australian Obesity Summit will tackle major challenges such as the constant balancing act of weighing up the cost and provision of quality food vs junk food, why the consumption of junk food is a lot higher than healthy food, the impact of effective health education, how socio economic trends can play a major role in the rise of obesity. Greater emphasis will be placed on getting to the core of the problem by taking a preventative approach and via early intervention.

This insightful event is expected to attract a plethora of industry experts and will provide a platform for health professionals from public and private sectors alike. Key decision makers from Government departments, along with solution providers, health insurers, industry associations and academics Australia wide, will be under one roof to reopen the debate of obesity in Australia.

Come and join us in one of the most debatable issues facing Australians over two full days of this flagship event!
