The Treasury has recently amended its population projection for Australia. It is now estimated that 35million people will inhabit the country by the middle of the century. In comparison to today’s population of over 22million, this represents an increase of over 55%. At the same time, the population is ageing. The Australian Bureau of Statistics has projected the median age of Australia is expected to increase from 38.2 in 2010 to 45.2 in 2050.

Population growth requires planning, and Australia's projected population boom and demographic change will require careful consideration by policy makers in government and all major sectors, including healthcare, education and construction. In a world where the environment is put under further scrutiny, the impact of population growth in Australia will create issues associated with sustainability.

With this in mind, the ‘Population Australia: 2050'summit will highlight the major implications that population change will have on the major sectors and discuss what decisions can be made to maintain a sustainable population growth in a society that is consistently changing.
