In light of last year’s Treasury predictions, that the population of Australia was forecast to reach 36million by 2050, the topic of population has never been far from the press.
As a delicate subject, experts and commentators often sit on either side of the fence. The “progrowth” and the “slowgrowth” side.
Recently, the Minister for Sustainable Population, Tony Burke, has released a report titled ‘A sustainable population strategy for Australia’. The government are looking to use the increase in population to grow Australia’s regional cities. The Department of Immigration is also heavily involved, with Minister Chris Bowen announcing that temporary migrants in regional areas will be fast tracked to permanent residency.
It is not just the regions that population growth will affect. Rapid growth is still occurring in capital cities as the growing population seeks economic wellbeing. Transport and infrastructure is under the microscope and planners are preaching the importance of getting things right – and getting things right now.
The 2nd annual Population Australia 2050 Summit will highlight the major implications that population change will have on the major sectors and examine what decisions can be made to maintain a sustainable population growth in a society that is consistently changing
