4th annual
Housing Affordability Congress
14th – 15th December 2010, Sydney Harbour Marriott Hotel
Working together to create strategies to overcome the housing affordability crisis.
“Australia faces a housing affordability ''time bomb'' - primed by a dysfunctional planning system, a chronic undersupply of homes, and unrealistic expectations from buyers, according to the chief of one of the nation's largest homebuilders. Stockland managing director Matthew Quinn, in a speech in Sydney, said Australia's current shortage of 200,000 homes and an annual shortfall of 60,000, would balloon to 800,000 by 2020, if no reforms were undertaken.”
The Age, 17th March 2010
“The problems with housing undersupply and affordability were made clear in this year’s second annual report by the National Housing Supply Council. The report found that underlying demand continues to grow and is projected to increase to 11.8 million in 2029 and that the gap between demand and supply will continue to increase unless there are changes to demand and/or supply levels.”
Dynamic Business, 17th August 2010
Now in its fourth year, the Housing Affordability Congress will bring together key stakeholders to address the intensifying issue of housing affordability in Australia.
With only a fraction of Australia’s municipalities considered affordable by the consumer price index and an over-hanging shortfall of new dwellings in the pipe, this problem is only set to get worse over the next 12 months.
The Congress will discuss the housing issues from an economic, political and social perspective and will give you a thorough examination of how these problems can be overcome.
The focus will be on better understanding the influencing factors and using these to create working strategies. You can benefit from a wealth of knowledge at this Congress and, as you learn and network over the two days, you will gain new insights into how successful projects are working to stem the housing crisis.
Taking a holistic approach, key issues in demand and supply will be examined against the numerous policies, agencies and reports which are focused on turning the immanent crisis. Experts speakers will include:
- Rob Ellis, Principal, Property Insights will examine the continuing crisis looking at key demand and supply issues
- Tim Lawless, Research Director, RPData will go into detail on Australia’s changing demography and what it means for housing affordability
- Gary Ganer, Lecturer, School of the Built Environment, Queensland Institute of Technology presents on the impact of asset holding on affordability and how this can affect policy
