Whole of Life Schools and the Integration of Education and Community Facilities

This workshop will focus on the design of whole of life schools, an educational trend which has been emerging overseas for the last 20 years and which now has its first built examples in Australia. Topics covered will include:

  • Why integrate educational and community facilities?
  • Contemporary examples from the Netherlands, Canada and United States
  • Design development to support modern educational pedagogy
  • How to integrate community goals and objectives into the design process
  • Managing multiple community and educational stakeholders
  • Multi-functional requirements and zoning for extended operational hours (7am-10pm)
  • Measuring the social benefits of integrated educational facilities

Specific reference will be made to Yuille Park Community School, which won the Overall Best School Design Project at the Victorian School Design Awards in 2008 and uses concepts central to the Victorian Governments recently launched Education Blueprint. Actionable information will be provided, and participant discussion and interaction is encouraged to make the most of this skills development opportunity.
